Structural dynamics - Earthquake engineering / Bridge dynamics and Traffic-induced vibrations
M.Sc.

As part of the reorganised teaching of ‘Structural Dynamics’ and ‘Applied Structural Dynamics’, the Institute of Structural Mechanics and Design and the Institute for Solid Structures divide up the lectures. At the Institute for Solid Structures, ‘Earthquake engineering’ is offered in the winter semester and ‘Bridge dynamics and Traffic-induced vibrations’ in the summer semester.

Earthquake engineering (winter semester)

Course language: German | 3 CP | 2 SWS

Term: winter semester (second half)

Schedule: Mon. 08:00-11:30

Bridge dynamics and Traffic-induced vibrations (summer semester)

Course language: German | 3 CP | 2 SWS

Term: summer semester (second half)

Schedule: Wed. 08:10-09:40 | Fr. 11:40-13:10

General information:

  • It is strongly recommended to take the module ‘Structural Dynamics – Fundamentals (Baudynamik-Grundlagen)’ of the Institute of Structural Mechanics and Design in preparation, which is offered in the first half of the semester!

Content – Earthquake engineering (winter semester)

This lecture teaches the fundamentals of the design of structures under earthquake loading. Both the determination of the earthquake-generated stresses on the entire structure and the earthquake-compliant design, as well as the construction for absorbing earthquake-generated stresses are explained.

Content – Bridge dynamics and Traffic-induced vibrations (summer semester)

This lecture deals with the basics of dynamic loading of structures such as bridges, tribune girders or building slabs caused by traffic-induced vibrations. Such vibrations can be caused by road, railway or pedestrian traffic and must be limited by suitable measures in order to comply with the comfort criteria and design limits of structures.
